The VietGrill is a small restaurant in the town center of Canton, MA, the type of place where one goes for the food as opposed to the atmosphere. The restaurant seats twenty-four. The décor is some spectacularly happy philodendrons and pothos plants, a couple of prints of paintings of Vietnamese scenery, and a photograph of Red Sox baseball’s Fenway Park.
Vietnamese Restaurant Menu
The menu lists the offerings in both Vietnamese and an English translation, helpful for people who are always apologetically mangling another language or pointing at the menu to indicate what they want. The lunch specials are all well under ten dollars, diners will get back bills, not just coins. The dinner entrees are also under ten dollars.
Two people could order a couple of appetizers, a couple of entrees, and share the dessert – delicious homemade flan (custard) topped with caramelized sugar – and spend approximately twenty-five dollars; a fantastic deal for wonderful food that doesn’t involve a large restaurant chain.
The restaurant doesn’t serve alcohol. Beverages include spring water, lemonade, and soda along with jasmine tea and Vietnamese coffee. For diners who miss having a drink, eat here and then go to one of the bars in Canton center.
The lunch combinations offer a sate in chicken, pork, beef, or shrimp; a spring roll or chicken wing; steamed rice, and Vietnamese salad (carrots and cabbages marinated in lemon sugar, crushed roasted peanuts, salt, and cilantro). Lunch eaten in the restaurant comes with vegetable soup, but the soup isn’t available for take-out.
The restaurant does offer limited meatless options. The lunch special includes bean curds over rice vermicelli and Vietnamese salad. Another option is deep fried bean curds stirred with tomatoes, peas, carrots, and scallions.
VietGrill offers three soups – wonton, beef, and chicken – that each can serve as a meal. Two sub sandwiches – beef teriyaki and marinated pork – are available for lunch or dinner. Entrees include lemongrass chicken; beef, chicken, or shrimp sate; crepes with chicken, shrimp, and vegetables; and grilled pork chops.
The chef’s specials include, but are not limited to, Vietnamese Patties of shrimp, pork, chicken, and vegetables steamed and then broiled and served over rice vermicelli and Vietnamese salad. Another offering is the Fried Wonton with shrimp and chicken steamed and then fried in a wonton wrapper. It is served with crispy noodles and sautéed vegetables.
