As many Beatles fans know, the Beatles collection is not available in digital format, and thus the only way to generally get their music is to buy a CD! However, Beatles lovers all around the world now have a new way to enjoy the Beatles music, with the superb Beatles Rock Band Game.
What is Rock Band?
Rock Band is a game in which you and your friends can pick up ‘electronic’ instruments and play along to many popular songs. You can play bass guitar, lead guitar, drums and also be the vocalist. The instruments have color coded buttons that correspond to ‘frets’ on the screen – you simply have to follow the ‘colored’ markers on the frets that scroll down the screen! In the most difficult modes you have to press multiple buttons at the same time!
It’s an amazing game that allows multiple players to play at the same time, and with the career modes and the ever increasing number of songs to download, it has a longevity that makes the fairly expensive price more acceptable over time.
The game is addictive and challenging, and even has some challenge events online, that allow you to show your Rock Band prowess to the rest of the world!
Essentially it’s taken the idea of Dance Dance revolution and converted it to a rock band setting!
The Beatles Rock Band game follows the general format of the Rock Band genre, but has some special highlights not available in the traditional game:
As you progress through the game you get to visit some of the actual venues that the Beatles have played in; this ranges from the Cavern in Liverpool, the studio in Abbey Road and to their famous concert performance in Shea Stadium New York. While the environments do not change the game play, they do add a lot of atmosphere to the game, and give it a historical feel – the environment are re-created pretty well.
The Xbox 360 special edition version gives you the software, a great Hofner bass guitar controller like the one McCartney loves, a Beatles branded drum set, a mike and a mike stand – you don’t need these if you already own the rock band game, but they do make a nice touch for Beatles fans!
The game features 40 of the Beatles hits for you to play and sing along to; of course there are plenty more songs to be downloaded from Xbox Live!
The Beatles Rock Band game offers a new feature – harmonies – this means that you can have multiple vocalists at the same time trying to recreate the Beatles’ amazing harmonies – this, for me, was pretty funny especially when the three vocalists I sang with all had different keys! OUCH!
The game works with Rock Band and Guitar Hero controllers and microphones – so you don’t have to buy the special edition if you don’t want to!
I’ve played rock band with my daughter and while I’ve enjoyed playing it, I never really felt in ‘touch’ as many of the songs were modern and I simply didn’t know them! The beauty about the Beatles Rock Band game is that most ‘parents’ love the Beatles and know the majority of the songs. The kids love Rock Band, and probably know many of the songs – so the game truly does appeal to the whole family. We bought the game and completed it on the first day as a family – we didn’t get full points, and my daughter and her boyfriend have replayed the game many times to get 5 stars on every song – but overall we had a great day playing the game.
It’s very easy to play, and even an old guy like me was able to play the drums and do justice to some of the guitar solos – our harmonies were really bad, but that was part of the fun of the game, and we ended up laughing at the end of many songs.
The whole game simply is great; it brings a whole new generation to the Beatles, but also brings families together around the Xbox 360!
