We have a limited amount of snack food in our house; especially since most of what we have is marked for our oldest daughter’s school lunches. So, when my wife and I were both getting tired of microwave popcorn during the hour or so we get to ourselves each night to watch TV or a movie, she decided to pick up something different the last time she was at the store.
What she ended up buying was a bag of French Onion Rippled Chips from the brand Old Dutch.
I have had a few other Old Dutch products recently and, to be perfectly honest, was not overly impressed with them. The brand does try, but the products always seemed to taste a bit cheap. This wouldn’t have been a big deal had the Old Dutch brand been cheaper. But, we really didn’t save a whole lot of money.
So, when I saw this bag of chips and learned that my wife spent almost as much on that as she would have spent on a more reliable brand, I wasn’t overly thrilled. And, after trying the chips, I’m sorry to say they didn’t do anything to change my mind.
One of the first things I noticed when I opened the bag was how many broken chips were inside it. To be fair, when it comes to something like that, there is always the potential the store mishandled the bag. But, we have bought plenty of other chips from this particular store and have never had the same issue.
The chips also had a greasy feel to them. This is something all chips have (at least those that aren’t baked) but, once again, the grease on these was in a quantity I would expect from a cheaper brand of chip; not one that cost us as one of the top brands.
As far as taste goes, they weren’t terrible. The French onion seasonings were a bit strong at first but I was able to get used to them after a few chips. But, while not bad, they also didn’t offer anything that I couldn’t get if I bought a more affordable brand.
There was a time when I loved the Old Dutch brand. But, after having so many disappointments, I now have serious doubts about ever buying a product from them again. And, I know, even if I do, it will not be this particular chip.
