After several weeks of 80-plus degree weather, we got hit by a bit of a cold spell over the weekend (it was still in the 60s but it was a noticeable difference). Because of this, I decided it was a good opportunity to make a batch of chili and decided to pick up ingredients for it while at the store.
One thing I ended up purchasing while there were a couple cans of Our Family Kidney Beans; one light and one dark. It had been a while since I had purchased that particular brand and I wasn’t sure what I was getting from it. But, it was considerably cheaper than the other brands of kidney beans on the shelf and we were on a bit of a tight budget so I decided to take a chance on them.
It turns out they did not disappoint me.
I do want to start out and make it clear that this was not the best brand of kidney bean I have ever purchased. In fact, there was another brand available to me at the time that I know was better and, if I would have been more willing to spend an additional amount of money on it, I would have purchased that brand instead.
However, as far as bargain brands go, the Our Family brand exceeded my expectations.
First, the beans were decent sized and there were quite a few inside the can. This is important to me because I like my chili to be filling (so it will last me through several meals) and, when it comes to that, the more beans the better. The Our Family beans filled the can; something I can’t say about most other cheaper brands (which are usually almost all water).
In terms of flavor, I would say these beans were OK. They weren’t anything special and I can’t say they did anything to improve the overall flavor of my chili. But, they were good enough for the price and didn’t do anything to hurt the flavor either. In other words, I would say they were average tasting kidney beans at a below average price.
After trying the Our Family brand and becoming reacquainted with their kidney beans, I do feel this is a product I would buy again. There are still brands out there that I like better. But, this brand offers just enough quality to be a cheaper alternative when I don’t feel like spending a fortune.
