It is very hard to find food items our oldest daughter will actually eat; especially when it comes to meat. Basically, if it isn’t a chicken nugget or a hot dog, we have a heck of a time getting her to even try it.
This is why, when my wife came across Pillsbury Savorings Mini Crescent Dogs the other day, she decided to pick up a box of them. They had hot dogs in them, which we knew our daughter would like, but they also came backed in a roll; something we knew would at least give her a little bit of variety.
However, as we made these for her and (since there were plenty for everyone) I gave them a try too; I made the unfortunate discovery that these weren’t as good as we first thought they would be.
I am going to start out by saying there were some things I did like about this brand. First, I loved the fact the crescent dogs could be made either in the oven or, if you are in a rush, the microwave. And, as I said before, there was quite a bit in terms of quantity. When I saw the box, I thought we would be lucky if there were just enough for the kids. I wasn’t expecting to have enough of these to feed the entire family (especially since they weren’t overly expensive).
The crescent roll itself was also pretty decent. It wasn’t dry and plain like the rolls in similar products. Instead, it tasted like something we just baked in our oven rather than something that was pre-baked and then frozen.
The part that really proved to be a disappointment for me was actually the hot dog portion of this item. The hot dogs came out over cooked and, as a result were tough and dry. They also had a bit of a weird, salty taste to them.
I do feel the overcooked part of this was due to the fact we did use our microwave to make these rather than the oven and, even though the instructions are there, I would recommend avoiding making that mistake. However, that part wouldn’t have corrected the flavor of the hot dogs so, even without over cooking them; I do think this is something that would still have been a disappointment. And, it wasn’t a surprise when my daughter didn’t eat too many of these.
They ended up having some decent things about them, but I do think this will be the last time I buy this particular product.
