As I mentioned in another review, my wife did some grocery shopping Friday evening after work. While at the store, she came across something new in the freezer section; Stouffer’s Corner Bistro Stuffed Melt and Soup frozen dinners. We intended on ordering a pizza that night but she thought they would make a good lunch for us so she picked up a couple.
When I saw these, I immediately saw and shared her attraction to them. Unlike many other frozen meals that offer only a sandwich; this one offers a melted sandwich (similar to a Hot Pocket) and, to go with it, a bowl of soup.
We never got around to having them for lunch. But, we did decide to make them for dinner last night since it was getting late, neither of us had eaten yet and neither of us really felt like cooking anything complicated.
I ended up having the steak and Swiss melt with the broccoli and cheddar soup. When I looked at the box originally, I figured it would have a decent sized sandwich inside but only a small bowl of soup (with maybe three or four bites worth). It turns out I was wrong. The sandwich was a bit smaller than expected but still decent sized and the plastic bowl the soup came in was large enough to be a meal in itself.
Quality wise, the Stouffer’s melt and soup dinner did seem to be a bit lacking. The soup, for example, tasted OK but it was very watery. The sandwich was also better than I expected a frozen sandwich to be. But, it did seem to lack something (probably salt) so I can’t say it was the best one I have ever eaten.
However, what surprised me about this dinner was how filling it was. I was able to eat my entire sandwich but only made it through about half of the soup before I was full. I have had plenty of frozen dinners that appeared to be larger but weren’t nearly as satisfying. I especially liked the soup because it gave a comforting feeling you just can’t get with most other meals.
When I first saw these, I thought they were something that only had potential as an easy and filling lunch idea. But, after trying them, I think they would be perfect for lunch or dinner. They might lack a little bit in terms of taste. But, the convenience and the fact they are very filling more than makes up for that.
