When my wife told me she was running to the store last night to pick up something for dinner, I once again was left a bit curious about what she was planning on bringing home since she’s been getting a bit bored with our usual meals and has been forcing us to try new things.
When I got home with the kids, I found she had decided on Chinese for dinner using frozen items from the brand Tai Pei. This, in itself, wasn’t anything overly unusual since we have had that before. However, I learned she purchased something we had never tried before; Tai Pei Mini Vegetable Spring Rolls.
At first, when I learned what they were, I wasn’t really all that thrilled about her choice. I know vegetarian type items like that are supposed to be better for me and I do try to keep an open mind. But, I have never been able to convince my taste buds that a roll like that is as good as one with pork or chicken inside it.
However, after trying them, I do have to admit I was pretty impressed with them.
First of all, as far as taste goes, these were much better than I expected them to be. I think part of the reason for that is there was a nice variety of vegetables inside the rolls and those were in even portions. In comparison, the last time I had a spring roll like this, it was almost all lettuce.
Also helping was the roll itself. I can’t really come up with the words to describe it accurately. But, it added to the overall flavor rather than just being something to hold the other ingredients in place.
The thing that really surprised me about these was how filling they proved to be. When I looked at them, they didn’t look any bigger than the average mini egg roll that I can eat a box of at a time. But, after about two or three of these, I honestly was starting to feel full. My wife and I were munching on these while the rest of the dinner was cooking and, by the time the dinner was done, I pretty much had to force myself to eat at least part of the other items.
If you are looking to make Chinese food at home and want something a bit different, I would recommend picking up a bag of these.
