Unable to find my usual cat litter (the pine pellet variety) at the local store, I took advantage of a dollar-off coupon I had from another Arm & Hammer Product and purchased a 14-Lb. box of Arm and Hammer Clumping Cat Litter, Multi-Cat Strength.
I had high hopes – or, at least, higher hopes. The box is heavy, but it provides you with a convenient handle for carrying. This particular litter is supposed to be highly absorbent and is designed for multiple cats. I currently have five! So, I was anxious to see what advantages this particular litter might provide. After all, it is an Arm & Hammer product.
The litter is composed of two sizes of particles. One is like large pieces of sand and the other is a fine dust. It must also contain some kind of clay that causes the product to clump whenever it becomes moist for any reason.
There are a few things I did not like about this product and not one thing, apart from the handle on the box, that I liked.
Firstly, the litter particles are so fine that they are easily tracked and create a lot of dust when poured into the litter pan.
Secondly, the litter clumps and clings to the litter pan. It will also stick to your litter scooper. It makes a disgusting, clinging mess. Every time I cleaned the pan, I had to toss all of the litter and scrub the pan to get the clinging litter off of it.
Thirdly, because the litter is not very scoopable and because it clings and makes such a mess on the litter pan, I used up the entire 14-pound box in about 4 days! This is hardly economical.
Fourthly, If the litter dust comes in contact with anything else – like your floor – and then becomes moist while you’re cleaning, you will have to do a little extra scrubbing to get the clinging clay to come loose.
Fifthly, the odor control factor was no better than ordinary, cheap kitty litter from a dollar store. In fact, you’ll get more mileage out of it and it will be easier to clean up than this product. If you want extra odor-control, just add baking soda.
Sixthly, the packaging is cumbersome. It takes up a lot of room in the trash bin. I prefer the collapsible paper or plastic bags that contain most other litters. But, this product seems to be mostly about the packaging, anyway. It is a complete let down.
In conclusion, I will not purchase this product again nor would I recommend it to anyone else. If I had no other choice, I’d limp along with the cheap stuff until I could purchase a pellet-type of litter. This product does not represent Arm & Hammer’s best efforts.
