My wife pulled her arm the other day while at work. It isn’t anything overly serious, but it was bothering her a bit over the weekend and taking pain killers wasn’t completely helping it.
Sunday morning, we were watching TV while waiting for the Packers game and I saw an advertisement for Tylenol Precise Pain Relieving Cream. It looked interesting and, knowing my wife was still experiencing a bit of discomfort, I decided to run up the street to Walgreen’s and buy her some. It was nearly $8 for the tube. But, I took a bit of comfort in the fact that it was apparently a popular item since I was getting the last one on the shelf.
When I got it home, however, we quickly decided it was not worth the money.
Part of the problem is I think the commercial for this is a bit misleading. Since it is from Tylenol, a well-known pain killer manufacturer, it’s really not that hard to assume they are using some of that know-how in this product and, in return, selling something that is better than the other pain relieving creams (like Ben Gay) that are already available (including some that cost less).
That, however, was not the case. The product worked and gave her a tingling sensation in her arm rather than discomfort for most of the day. But, from what she described to me, it didn’t work any better than any of the other pain relieving creams we already have in our house.
What really turned me off about this product, however, was the smell. Most pain relieving creams have some sort of odor to them, so this wasn’t that much of a surprise. But, with most creams, the odor is only really noticeable if you are standing right next to the person. The smell from this cream was strong enough for me to smell it in the kitchen (where she applied it) from the other side of our house. I jokingly told my wife the cream doesn’t really relieve pain; the fumes just get you high enough to think it does.
Again, the Tylenol Precise did work. So, I can’t say the television ad for it lied to me. However, as I said before, there also isn’t anything about this product that sets it apart from the many other products that are already on the market. Because of that, I think I would choose a cheaper brand the next time around.
