This cold of mine has been getting the best of me and, while I have found some cold medicines that seem to help relieve some of the crappy feeling; most only treat a few of my symptoms and I am either left with my cough or my runny nose, etc.
I had been doing a bit better yesterday but started feeling horrible yesterday evening. So, despite the fact I probably shouldn’t have been driving in my condition, I ended up running up to Walgreen’s in search of something that would help with everything.
It turns out I’m not the only one who is sick. I say that because, when I got to the store, I discovered most of their cold medicines were sold out. I had given up hope of finding something until I found Zicam Chewable Tablets on sale.
I have heard of this product before. But, even though plenty of people have told me it works, I have always had some doubts about the power of zinc when it comes to fighting a bad cold. But, as I said before, my choices were very limited so I decided to spend the $12 and give this a try.
I actually had a choice between the chewable version and other versions of this cold remedy. I ended up choosing the chewable tablets because I was getting tired of pills and figured they would be a nice change. Plus, if the Zicam worked, I figured it was something my oldest daughter could take if she caught my cold.
Even though I had taken some cough medicine only a couple hours earlier, I was miserable enough when I got home to take one of the tablets from this medicine right away (I figured it was best to do it then since the box says not to drink anything for 10 minutes prior to taking this remedy and I knew I hadn’t drank anything). Again, when I got this, I had a lot of doubts about it. So I was surprised when, after about five minutes, I actually did start feeling a bit better.
I should make this clear that the Zicam did not do anything to eliminate any of my symptoms and I don’t think it is any more of a cold remedy than chicken soup. But, it did reduce them quite a bit. I wasn’t coughing as bad and my nose stopped running. If nothing else, it gave me just the right amount of relief so I could relax a bit (and we all know rest is the best remedy for a cold).
Unlike most cold medicines, this one did not leave me feeling drugged up. However, I did experience one side effect from it; after chewing the tablet, I had a weird, metal-like after taste in my mouth that just did not go away. It wasn’t a huge deal, but it did affect the flavor of just about everything I ate.
Overall though, I do feel this is a product that is worth trying. I don’t know if it really will cure my cold but it is at least working better than a lot of the cold medicines I’ve tried without all their side effects.
