Rick Sanchez was fired for anti-Semitic comments yesterday. With Rick Sanchez gone, he becomes the second media figure to be let go for anti-Semitism, after Helen Thomas suffered the same fate. Yet Thomas is a print journalist, and was let go for suggesting that Jews should leave Israel. In the case of CNN’s former pundit, he was let go for a rant targeted at Jon Stewart, of all people. Since he indirectly got Rick Sanchez fired, Jon Stewart is bound to have a lot of new material for The Daily Show, and for his upcoming rally.
Stewart frequently uses Sanchez as fodder for The Daily Show – frequently replaying a clip of him getting tased. This came up during a radio interview with Pete Dominick on Thursday, which led into some unexpected areas.
The quotes that got Rick Sanchez fired were triggered by him calling Stewart a bigot, against “everyone else who’s not like him” Once Dominick stated that Stewart is a minority himself, Sanchez countered by using the old stereotype of Jewish people controlling the media – including his own network.
Even if the comments about Jews did not get Rick Sanchez fired, including CNN as part of his rant probably finished the job. Sanchez implied that everyone who ran CNN and many other networks were “a lot like Stewart” which to him, proved that the Jewish were not “an oppressed minority”
Since he just got done calling Stewart a bigot, and said that those who ran CNN and the media were a lot like him, it did not reflect well in many areas. Therefore, after the rant hit the Internet, CNN had Sanchez fired yesterday afternoon. This means that they have the weekend to figure out what to do with his afternoon show, Rick’s List.
This is not the first time Stewart played a part in getting a CNN employee canned. His famed takedown of Tucker Carlson on Crossfire is thought to have helped get the show canceled soon after. This time, however, a CNN pundit dug his own grave in targeting Stewart.
At the least, with Rick Sanchez fired, Stewart has brand new evidence for why he is holding the “Rally To Restore Sanity” on October 30. After all, it is set up to be a haven for people who don’t stoop to calling opponents bigots.
Still, now that Sanchez is gone, Stewart has lost one of his primary sources for mockery – though he should be able to send him off with a bang next week.
