Rick Sanchez is fired from CNN for calling comedian Jon Stewart a bigot and for remarks against CNN, as reported at Today. Sanchez’s comments were made on the radio show Stand Up With Pete Dominick.
Sanchez says that he doesn’t respect John Stewart and that Stewart is a Jewish person who can’t relate to Mexicans or other minorities. Sanchez, who is Cuban, was also angry at CNN for replacing his anchoring of the 8pm time slot with Parker Spitzer. Before Rick Sanchez was fired, he said, “I’m telling you that everybody who runs CNN is a lot like Stewart, and a lot of people who run all the other networks are a lot like Stewart, and to imply that somehow they, the people in this country who are Jewish, are an oppressed minority? Yeah.”
On the radio show, Rick Sanchez also took a shot at Stephen Colbert, although Colbert is Irish Catholic. Rick Sanchez has been with CNN since 2004.
Jon Stewart makes fun of Rick Sanchez, but is Sanchez’s race the reason?
Jon Stewart, during his The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, has shown video of Sanchez, from his CNN show, and points out stupid things that Sanchez has said or done. If you’re Sanchez and you pay attention to that, you can go one of two ways. You can get really upset or you can take the jokes in stride and go on with life.
Says Sanchez, who insists that Stewart is not a comedian but someone who people rely on for the news, “If I was just the Hispanic guy who read the news at CNN and paid attention and just read the teleprompter every day, very carefully, and never said anything, never had a personality, then I’d be fine. He wouldn’t pick on me. He’s upset that someone of my ilk is at almost his level.”
Rick Sanchez said Stewart can make or break careers. But in this case, Sanchez broke his own career. Maybe Stewart is right and Sanchez really is two sandwiches short of a picnic. Making statements against Stewart is one thing, but it’s just plain common sense not to make public disparaging remarks about your employer.
Now that Rick Sanchez has been fired, what should he do?
Playing the race card didn’t go well for Sanchez. So, what should he do now?
If you want to say whatever you feel, you have to be smart about it. Since Sanchez chose to dig his own grave by calling Jon Stewart a bigot and for saying disparaging comments about his employer, CNN, perhaps he should try something like Satellite radio? It worked for Howard Stern.
Whatever he does, Rick Sanchez should definitely work on his self-esteem. Although minorities can relate to where Sanchez is coming from, not all of us have poor self-esteem and huge chips on our shoulders.
