Rick Springfield, the popular ’80s icon and pop singer most famous for his 1981 hit “Jessie’s Girl,” bared all in his new memoir Late, Late at Night. In the book, Springfield details his struggle with depression that led him to attempt suicide at age 17. However, the noose snapped.
“Having suicide ride on my shoulders was not a lot of fun through a lot of my life and surviving that was a real high point for me,” Springfield told Reuters.
But depression wasn’t Rick Springfield’s only revelation in his new memoir. The 61-year-old talks about traveling to Vietnam in 1968 as 17-year-old Australian rock musician. Springfield was part of a group sent to entertain U.S. troops and tells tales of living “off the grace of the hookers there,” according to an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
While in Vietnam, Springfield played around with hand grenades and participated in a fire fight with ambushing Viet Cong. During the melee, Springfield helped load mortars that led to the death of at least one man.
In the 1970s, Springfield moved to California to pursue his music career and eventually shacked up with 15-year-old Exorcist star Linda Blair. All before Springfield would successfully become a teen heartthrob in 1981 at the age of 31.
In the memoir, Rick Springfield also talks about his extensive infidelity and sexual exploits outside of wedlock, including working on cruise ships in the Bahamas in the 1990s. However, despite his poor behavior, Springfield credits his wife as having a “calming effect” on him, according to the NY Daily News.
“It is on me, it’s completely on me. And my wife is the most amazing person in the world,” Springfield stated on Good Morning America. “It doesn’t excuse me from having done it, and I wear that guilt. But I am human and we want to be together and we want it to work,” he added.
Rick Springfield is currently working on a new album. He also has a documentary coming out next year.
