It was vilified as a massive bailout. It was maligned as everything from a redistribution of wealth to a multi-generational train robbery. Republicans have screamed and raved about these alleged government takeovers of the banks/ car industry/ Justin Beiber from the second President Obama took office. Of course, it was of small consequence that the first seven hundred billion dollars were authored and authorized by the Bush administration. One could also point out the simple fact that republicans were in charge when things fell apart. But as my students would say, “Why you bringing up old stuff?”
Republican figures, including a rather vocal Texas Governor Perry, have used this “plan” to blame everyone else for the sputtering economy. What’s worse, these same republicans who whined about bankrupting our children, quietly took those monies and are currently running campaigns taking credit for the jobs it saved in their districts. Now they want to 97% of Americans to take out another seven hundred billion dollar loan to give the top two percent a six- figure tax break.
The G.O.P have done everything they could to destroy America’s first Black President. The dirty smear and fear tactics they have employed for decades have become nastier. The real problem is the transparent, deliberate opposition solely for the sake of control. This uniformed, naked attempted power grab should be the clearest indication that republicans work for the top two percent richest Americans while systematically working against the majority of Americans. Even on issues where both parties once agreed there is now unanimous opposition from the G.O.P. What Happened?
Obama happened. More specifically, Bush happened. The previous debacle- filled eight years exposed the myth of fiscally conservative republicans. The fantasy of less taxes and higher quality of living didn’t quite ring true. The crushing democratic victories in 2006 and 2008 struck panic into the traditional power managers. They have become desperate and reckless. The republicans and their mouthpiece Fox News have tried to destroy, dominate, or deport every minority group they didn’t control. First it was various Black leaders. Next they unabashedly lied about activities involving the community organizing giant Acorn. After the outright claims were rebuffed, the G.O.P moved on to Hispanics. Now that Muslims are targets of the bigots in America, republicans are eager to ride this fast lane of fear.
Republicans only run/vote against issues. They have no workable ideas. They stir up the conservative base with hate, not constructive goals. November will be no different. Locally, people like Rick Perry will continue to use state funds to stall federal funding, even amidst a twenty billion dollar shortfall in Texas. Other republicans will publically inveigh against federal stimulus while clandestinely siphoning money and taking credit for it back home. It is every American’s duty to remain informant about these salient issues. We also have a duty to call these hypocrites out, publically. Remember: an unchallenged lie grows into an old, understood truth.
