My husband and I love Mexican style food, and while he could care less what brand of refried beans I purchase, I am extremely picky. For the past ten years my favorite brand has been Rosarita. I like their extra spicy version, but when I couldn’t find it I chose Rosarita No Fat Zesty Salsa Refried Beans, and I love them!
Rosarita No Fat Zesty Salsa Refried Beans come in a 16 ounce can, and they were on sale for $1.29, which is a good buy. I find in our area this brand is usually a little more expensive than other brands of refried beans, but I still buy them when they are not on sale, because the flavor is worth the extra cost.
The front label has a lot of information on it! First, it states that Rosarita No Fat Zesty Salsa Refried Beans are an excellent source of fiber. The “No Fat” is written in bold yellow on a green background, and it’s hard to miss. One serving of Rosarita No Fat Zesty Salsa Refried Beans provides “35% of daily beans” (whatever that means).
There is a link to a website called “Start Making Choices.com”, as well as one to the USDA website explaining the food pyramid and how it works. Nutrition wise, only one half a cup of Rosarita No Fat Zesty Salsa Refried Beans contains only 100 calories, and again zero grams of fat! There are also zero grams of cholesterol, 600 mg of sodium, 420 mg potassium, 19 grams of carbohydrates, 6 grams dietary fiber, less than 1 gram of sugar, and 6 grams of protein.
A serving also provides the body with 2% calcium, 10% magnesium, 15 % manganese, 6% iron, and 10% phosphorus. All in all, a very healthy food to enjoy! And since these contain a zesty salsa (which I did not find to be spicy hot), they are more flavorful that normal refried beans.
One of my favorite lunches is to take a fat free flour tortilla, layer it with Rosarita No Fat Zesty Salsa Refried Beans and low fat shredded cheese, then warm it in my microwave for about 20 seconds, or until the cheese is melted. Then I add chopped tomatoes, fat free sour cream, and shredded lettuce and roll it up. This is a delicious tasting lunch or snack, and it definitely fits into my diet plans!
Rosarita No Fat Zesty Salsa Refried Beans are nice and thick, and they have a great flavor even when used without any other ingredients. They make a nice side dish for other Mexican foods such as tacos or burritos. If you like refried beans, you need to give the Rosarita brand a try. Just beware that these beans did cause me to have a lot of flatulence!
Rosarita is made by ConAgra Foods in Omaha, NE.
