Royal Oak is up Woodward Avenue, which is U.S. Highway 1, meaning that it was the first road in the country to be established as an interstate highway. I think it had something to do with the fact that Detroit was the Motor City and the birthplace of the car. As a matter of fact, the very first factory to ever exist in the world is along that same route, in Highland Park.
This year, Royal Oak was the host of the Oakland County Arts, Beats, and Eats festival. Although I have not attended, I’ve heard very good things from people who did. For the last several years, its been hosted in Pontiac. This year it moved to Royal Oak. I don’t know why, but it did.
This year there was a cloud over the event due to right-wing gun carriers. Militia, which are prevalent here in Michigan, wanted the City of Royal Oak to lift the ban and change the law associated with persons not being able to carry hand guns during a public event. They went to the city courthouse and somehow, got the legislature to remove the ban.
My question: If you are having a family event where there are going to be large numbers of small children present with their families, why do you need to carry a gun? Who are you trying to shoot? There had never been any incidents when it was hosted in Pontiac, so what makes you think it would be any different in Royal Oak? I don’t know what happened, but I don’t think that it was as big of a deal as it had been, when it was in Pontiac. I normally hear lots and lots of advertisements about the event all the way up and during the event, but this year I did not.
Many people that I know said they were not going to attend, because who wants to walk around with a child seeing open hand guns on everyone hip? This is not the wild, wild West — or is it?
