Mr. B’s is requesting permission to expand by building a rooftop patio and bar. The new rooftop bar would make three total for the establishment, as they already have two in their one-floor restaurant and bar. The owners would like to renovate the roof to accommodate 128 seats, which includes a 28-seat bar. Half of the roof would be covered and there would be a new emergency stairway built.
The Royal Oak Liquor Control Committee reviewed the proposal and recommended to the city commission that it deny the request. In a letter to the commission, the city attorney made the same recommendation. The recommendation was made despite the fact that the Royal Oak Police Department referenced the relatively few police runs made there over the last year. The police department also said that the new rooftop service would not strain police resources. They did, however, have a problem with the request to have music and the size of the 28-seat bar, and for that reason they ultimately recommended that the city commission deny the request.
