A Royal Oak man and World War II veteran is finally getting some overdue recognition. Long overdue recognition. As in 64 years in the making.
Joe Gonzalez left the service in 1946, knowing that he was probably owed some recognition from the Army Air Corps, but didn’t care, as long as he made it back home. He served a total of four years, from 1942 to 1946.
Gonzalez, now 86 years old, was given his well-earned medals this Veteran’s Day by Congressman Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Hills, after Gonzalez’s son Paul began making inquiries into his father’s service records.
