Rubbies Southside Grill and Bar is a no-frills restaurant in blue collar southern Louisville, Kentucky. At first glance, it does not encourage potential customers to stop in. The exterior is well worn and Rubbies really looks more like a bar than a restaurant. However, my family was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food when we visited Rubbies after getting a coupon from Restaurant.com. Here is my review of the restaurant and our meal.
Atmosphere Grade – D
When my family arrived, we accidentally entered through the bar entrance. This is easy to do, as the entrance to the restaurant (located down 30 feet or so) is not clearly marked. We looked around at the beer signs and seedy-looking patrons and almost left. However, the bartender must have sensed our confusion because she said, “You must need the restaurant” and pointed to the connecting door.
Even the restaurant part of Rubbies is pretty rough-looking. I could describe the furnishings in detail, but instead I will just say that it resembles a person’s forty-year-old kitchen. It is very plain, but we did not expect a four-star dining experience.
Service Grade – B +
Our waitress at Rubbies was awesome! She was attentive without being smothering, and she immediately pegged us as first-timers. She even anticipated that we had a Restaurant.com coupon. Since the coupon required us to spend 35 dollars to save 25 dollars off our tab, she helped us maximize our savings by calculating our tab and telling us we still had a few dollars left for dessert to reach our 35 dollar target.
She also did not include an 18 percent tip on our bill, even though Restaurant.com coupons authorize restaurants to do that. We ended up giving her a 20 percent tip for her professionalism and assistance. Our food arrived piping hot, and our drinks were refilled constantly throughout our meal.
Food Grade – B
I told you that we were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food! It was delicious! My family shared a sampler appetizer that included friend mushrooms, potato skins, jalapeno poppers and mozzarella sticks. The food was a little greasy, but that was hardly surprising, considering our choices. We wolfed it all down and waited for our entrees.
Our entrees were just as good as the appetizer. My wife had the hot brown and told me it was delicious. She said the turkey in her meal was better than some of the fancier restaurants we have previously visited. My five-year-old, as usual, had chicken nuggets. She did not complain. I ordered the night’s special, meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans. My only complaint with my meal is that the cook smothered my meat and potatoes with way too much red gravy. A third of the amount he poured all over my meal would have sufficed. However, the meatloaf was very juicy and the green beans were flavorful without being salty.
Our dessert, a huge freshly baked cookie with ice cream, was wonderful. I could not criticize this magnificent cookie in any way.
Our bill for our three-course dinner came to just a few cents over 35 dollars. After our 25 dollar discount, our bill was 12 dollars, including tax. A seven dollar tip (20 percent on our original tab) made our final bill 19 dollars. We have not visited Rubbies again but would consider coming back, especially if we can find another Restaurant.com coupon.
