One of my carpet cleaners went to give a quote to a woman who wanted her carpets stretched.
The carpet cleaner who had been there before had tried to sell her carpet stretching, and so the woman was convinced that she needed her carpets stretched.
My carpet cleaner took one look at her carpet and knew it did not need anything done to it. The carpet was clean, and it did not need to be stretched. There were some very minor issues with the underlying padding, but not enough to warrant any work be done to the carpet.
The carpet cleaner told the customer that, and she decided she did not want anything done.
She was very happy about his honesty and took several of our cards to pass to her friends and family. We did lose some revenue that day, but we are building a trusting customer base for life which will lead to success.

Yes, we did walk away with no money. I have had people try to argue with me, that getting as much out of clients is the goal of business. I have never agreed with that statement.
Treat People Right for a Successful Business
Our business strategy is to treat people right. We do this for very selfish reasons. If we are fair and honest to our customers, we will win their lifetime business. Not only that, but we will win their families business. There are many people who are not building a business, they are just creating revenue for today.
When you are building a business, the best thing you can do is be honest and fair with your customers.
Business is a relationship. In small business, it is our life blood. Small businesses cannot afford to have unhappy customers. Happy customers refer you to their friends and family, and you save money on advertising because of it.
