Ryder Cup pairings 2010 were revealed in a big ceremony today. The first pairings are for Friday’s fourball matches, as the 2010 Ryder Cup starts in the morning with four opening showdowns. Two Americans will take on two Europeans in each of the matches, as both squads hope to get off to a quick start. The likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Lee Westwood, Steve Stricker and Rory McIlory were set to have their names called in today’s announcement. Now that the pairings have been announced, they know who they are facing, and who they will be partnered up with.
Tiger Woods was placed in the third match of the day, as the world’s No. 1 will be playing with world No. 4 Steve Stricker. The two Americans will face Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher, who are ranked 16th and 27th, respectively.
The first of the Ryder Cup pairings will feature Phil Mickelson, as he and the hard-luck Dustin Johnson will represent America. But England also has a formidable duo, as Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer will be sent out.
As for Rory McIlory, although he and Tiger Woods have been linked together in the buildup, the Ryder matches will not have them together on Friday. McIlory will be in the second match, where US Open winner Graeme McDowell is his partner. The two are scheduled to take on Stewart Cink and Matt Kuchar.
For the last of the opening pairings, America’s Bubba Watson and Jeff Overton will face Britain’s Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington. Unlike the first three matches, this one has no superstars, although it has a major winner in Harrington. Yet it will still be a valuable showdown, as America and Britain will hope to end the opening day with a bang.
Friday’s format of “fourball” will have the players competing for who has the best individual score of a hole. Whoever does will get a point for his team, but if a player from each team ties for the best score, the hole will be halved. Afterward, they will play “foursome” matches, in which the golfers take turns hitting one ball, and then they will have singles matches to decide the title.
Now that the Ryder Cup pairings 2010 are set, it won’t be long before captains Colin Montgomerie and Corey Pavin have their choices put to the test. Coverage begins on ESPN at 3 a.m. tomorrow.
