My daughter introduced me to hummus some time ago. Prior to that, although I had heard the term, I really didn’t know what it was.
Hummus is a unique dip made from mashed chickpeas. It is usually blended with things like garlic, lemon juice and oil. Any number of vegetables or spices may also be used to flavor it.
I have really grown to love hummus, but I admit that I’m in somewhat of a rut when it comes to the brands and types that I choose. My favorite is the garlic flavored, but recently, I decided to branch out. I wanted to try something new without going too far off course. I finally settled on an artichoke and spinach hummus from Sabra. It proved a good choice.
I love fresh spinach and I love artichokes but I really like the two when they are blended together. They compliment each other very well and provide just the right amount of subtle zing.
What I particularly like about Sabra Spinach and Artichoke Hummus is that it is very rich, super smooth and unbelievably tasty. I also like the fact that it contains no trans fat or cholesterol. Those are two items I try to monitor in my daily diet.
I purchased my tub of Sabra Spinach and Artichoke Hummus at B. J.’s for about $6. The 1-lb. 14-oz tub provides 30 servings of this tasty treat.
There are 70 calories in each serving. Most of those — 50 — are fat related. However, only 1 gram is due to saturated fat.
Sabra Spinach and Artichoke Hummus is also low in carbohydrates at only 4 grams. It contains no sugar or cholesterol, but does have 150 milligrams of sodium.
On a positive note, Sabra Spinach and Artichoke Hummus provides 1 gram of protein and fiber. It also provides 2% of the daily-recommended amount of iron.
Ingredients in Sabra Spinach and Artichoke Hummus include artichoke, canola oil, chickpeas, cucumber, green and red bell peppers, lemon juice, onion, sesame paste, salt, soybean, spinach and water. It also includes citric acid, natural flavors, potassium sorbate and seasonings and spices.
Here is my summary review:
Taste: 5 stars. I love the taste of Sabra Spinach and Artichoke Hummus. It is rich enough to sooth your taste buds. You feel like you are cheating, but you really aren’t.
Appearance: 4 stars: I will admit that, at first, the strange baby poop green color was somewhat off putting. However, once I was able to look past the color, I was pleasantly surprised with the overall experience.
Nutrition: 4 stars. Artichoke and spinach are both good for you. For that matter, so are chickpeas. The fact that this particular hummus is low in fat and carbohydrates contains no cholesterol or sugar and offers both protein and fiber is a huge bonus. It is a good snack choice, particularly when paired with pita or the right kind of chip or cracker.
Ease: 5 stars. Sabra Spinach and Artichoke Hummus comes prepackaged. All you do is open and serve. It doesn’t get any easy than that.
Green rating: 5 stars. The tub in which Sabra Spinach and Artichoke Hummus comes is reusable. It is also recyclable.
Packaging: 5 stars. Sabra Spinach and Artichoke Hummus comes in a clear tub with dark green trim. The Sabra label is done in a lighter green with red and white print. A picture of chickpeas, spinach and artichokes is included on the lid top. Labeling on the tub itself is done to match. This package is colorful enough to warrant prompt attention and it makes the product easy to locate in the grocer’s cold case.
Ease of storage: 5 stars. The 1 lb. 14-oz tub measures about 5 ¼” in diameter and 3 ½” in height. It is about the same size as a large butter tub and takes up roughly the same room in the refrigerator. Sabra Spinach and Artichoke Hummus must be refrigerated.
Availability: 5 stars. The Sabra brand of hummus appears to be popular. It is available in many stores. It is particularly popular in large bulk retail stores like Sam’s Club, B. J.’s and Costco. I found mine at B. J.s.
Price: 5 stars. The cost is reasonable for the size. The 1 lb. 14-oz tub retails for around $6 to $7. With 30 servings per tub that equates to around $.25 per serving, which is a good price.
Product purchase probability: 5 stars. I really like this particular brand and type of hummus. I suspect I will purchase it often.
Final rating: 4.8 stars. Sabra is a leader in the hummus industry and their Spinach and Artichoke hummus is a winner!
