The sakya monastery located @ 108 NW 83rd street provides the following services that are open for public, with no need for refuge or any other empowerment.
Every Thursday, the monastery is open for chenrezi meditation starting at 7:15. Chenrezi meditation is for the purpose of developing compassion and loving kindness. On Fridays, The Sakya monastery also opens its dears up to the public for calm abiding meditation sessions beginning at 7: 00 pm. This meditation is excellent for beginners and is also used to help develop concentration.
On Saturdays the monastery is also open to the public starting at 9:00 am where you will have the great privilege of serving the monastery by doing various chores that need done. Also, after the morning chores are finished you can enjoy a delicious lunch with the monks.
Sunday Mornings, the doors to this sacred piece of Tibet opens up to the public yet again at 7:00 am for the sixteenth Arhat Puja beginning at 7:00 am.
Chenrezi meditations will also begin on Sundays at 10:00 for another session of compassion and peaceful loving kindness. The green tara practice is also open to the public but you must pay attention to the calendar because it only happens during a full moon.
Be sure that before you decide to come to check the calendar because sometimes lunar events will over ride the scheduled events of the monastery, which you may not be able to come to if you have not had an empowerment, or taken refuge.
Come in and enjoy a new culture, compassionate chants and peaceful meditations! We could all use more loving kindness in the world.
