The City of San Diego in California works hard to make sure that the city is clean for the residents and for the tourists that come to the city all year round. San Diego is unique as there is a great diversity in the terrain that surrounds city and county. There are mountains and desert to the east and beaches and marinas to the west. The central area of the city is very lush with vegetation.
With all of this diversity, there are many ways that ecology needs to be helped and where volunteers are needed. No matter what interests a volunteer has, they can find a way to help the area. San Diego has volunteer programs that offer opportunities to clean up the city which also helps the environment.
Community Parks and Recreation Centers
SanDiego Volunteer Opportunities
There are many programs within the Community Parks and Recreation Centers that are looking for volunteers. Each program needs individuals who can volunteer for specific times. They also allow volunteers to convert their hours to community service time which means that there are many who are helping out the area and taking care of their environment at the same time. Some of the programs offered are:
Habitat Restoration Volunteers – Volunteers help to plant native vegetation as well as setting up fencing to keep this vegetation from being trampled. They work directly with the park rangers. This program is available for individuals and groups. The best part of this program is that Balboa Park is one of the loveliest in the city. With the great weather, spending four hours on any Saturday planting vegetation is not really like volunteering at all.
Grounds Maintenance Assistant – Those who want to volunteer in different areas can help to keep the parks and beaches clean by picking up trash. There is a huge demand for this type of volunteer. The parks and beaches of San Diego are notoriously littered particularly around the three day weekends and in the summer. There are some programs for families where the volunteers are given free passes to Disneyland for their work during the day. There are only certain days when this program is offered.
There are many more opportunities for those who want to help out San Diego and get the city and county clean. The beaches can also be cleaned up and the parks always need upkeep that the city cannot afford. The community does come together to help make the city a great place to live and visit.
