Any type of cookie can be used, a sugar cookie is usually best because the cookies will be decorated. However, any type of cookie can be made that is the kids favorite. The cookies should be made round and slightly larger than the average cookie, so there is plenty of room to do the decorating.
For the decorating gather together:
- White icing
- Very light yellow icing
- Red icing
- M & Ms
- Thin red licorice
- Small gum drops
- A knife
- A small spatula
After the cookies are baked, let cool completely so that the icing does not melt. Use the yellow icing for the face of Santa. The white icing for the beard and the red icing for the hat. Use the small spatula to spread on the icing. Smooth the icing on, the colors may overlap a little, which is fine. The beard can be fluffier.
Use a small white gum drop for Santa’s hat. Use two M & Ms for the eyes, with the M letter facing the cookie. Use the knife to cut a small gum drop in the shape of a nose. Cut the thin red licorice to make the mouth. Variations can be done to make the cookies look like a reindeer by substituting the red licorice with black licorice for the antlers. Use a light brown icing instead as well for the face. Attach the antlers with frosting to the back of the cookie. Cut the gum drops for the nose and mouth. Use the M & Ms still for the eyes. Make a snowman face with many of the same supplies. Use the white icing for the face, M & Ms for the eyes and the nose, the gum drops can be used for the mouth or to add a hat feature.
