The mind-set for the new Tea Party types is to be anti-government on ALL things, especially if a Democrat proposes it and more specifically if someone within the Obama administration is connected to it. If you were to sit in a room with such people and listen to them chatter to each other you would think that the government is actually controlling more things in our lives than they are or even should be. Somehow these people have come to the conclusion that any and all sources of information from any government agency is an attempt to control their lives. Never mind the fact this information may save your life and prevent you from engaging in activities that adversely affect your pocket book; government data is out to control you.
Don’t believe? Listen to failed Alaskan governor Sarah Palin in a conversation with Laura Ingraham
“Take [Michelle Obama’s] anti-obesity thing that she is on. She is on this kick, right. What she is telling us is she cannot trust parents to make decisions for their own children, for their own families in what we should eat. And I know I’m going to be again criticized for bringing this up, but instead of a government thinking that they need to take over and make decisions for us according to some politician or politician’s wife priorities, just leave us alone, get off our back, and allow us as individuals to exercise our own God-given rights to make our own decisions and then our country gets back on the right track.”
Say What? I didn’t know that Michelle Obama was in my kitchen dictating what I can and can’t feed myself and my family. In fact, I’ll bet most people who listen to Sarah Palin regularly weren’t even aware that First Lady Michelle Obama was addressing the obesity epidemic in this country. Furthermore I’ll bet Sarah Palin herself hasn’t spent 5 minutes on Michelle Obama’s website, letsmove.gov, that discusses the need to serve our children nutritional meals to prevent obesity and the serious health problems like cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancer, and type 2 diabetes that stem from severely overweight children.
All the information at Let’s Move! comes from health and diet experts around the country and is free of charge to anyone who takes the time to read it. No one is forced to read it and no one is forced to apply it to their daily lives unless they use their “own God-given rights” to do so. But the little lady who likes the idea of shooting red meat from a helicopter is clearly telling people here that our country has been taken over by such know-it-alls and we should resist their evil plot to control us.
I don’t think any rational person would see Michelle Obama stating that “she cannot trust parents to make decisions for their own children, for their own families in what we should eat.” A more realistic view of the situation would simply show that because many parents have made certain decisions on what their children eat without any outside help from the gubbermint, the U.S. is the most obese developed nation in the world. Michelle Obama is merely pointing out this fact and offering suggestions, not legislation, to help mainly low income parents make smart decisions about their children’s diets to prevent serious health issues that they will not be able to afford.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) defines obesity as “a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater. BMI is calculated from a person’s weight and height and provides a reasonable indicator of body fatness and weight categories that may lead to health problems.”
It further points out information that Ms. Palin appears oblivious of. “During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. In 2009, only Colorado and the District of Columbia had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%. Thirty-three states had a prevalence equal to or greater than 25%; nine of these states (Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and West Virginia) had a prevalence of obesity equal to or greater than 30%.” Alaska has an obesity rate of 24.8% (SOURCE)
Based on this information you would think the Ms. Palin was telling her audience not to listen to sound advice about a premier health issue in this country. In the southern states where obesity rates are at their highest and where Ms. Palin has perhaps her largest following, some parents may become confused about what’s in their children’s best interest regarding their health. Could some even be led to believe that doing nothing about abnormally overweight children is a proper course of action? It’s very possible in a part of the country where Creationism debases the science of evolution.
