Don’t let your apartment heating bill ruin your holiday budget! Apartments are generally smaller than houses, but can still pile on the gas and electricity charges for winter heating. Here are sixtips to reduce the amount of money you spend on heating your apartment.
1) Install a programmable thermostat.
First ask your landlord, it may not cost you any money. If not, next check with your local utility company. My local utility just offered FREE showerheads and $4.99 programmable thermostats. After installed, thoroughly review the instructions and reduce the temperature when you are not home and at night.
2) Consider a space heater.
If you spend your evening’s primarily in your bedroom or family room, why spend money heating your whole apartment? Why not use a space heater for the area you are in and drop the temperature down a few degrees.
3) Bundle up!
Wear an extra layer! Put on a cozy pair of socks. Invest your money in a comfortable and warm pair of slippers. Where does your body feel the cold? Bundle up that area and you’ll save. I personally love my warm UGG boots. They were a large investment, but I use them as both slippers and outdoor shoes to run my dog outside. My toes constantly get cold and these make me feel much warmer without raising the apartment temperature.
4) Insulate your apartment windows.
First, make sure your storm windows are installed and closed. If your windows still have screens up, call your apartment landlord and ask if they are planning on putting up storm windows. Then, make sure that your windows are securely closed and fastened.
Finally, wrap your apartment windows with a DIY insulation kit. They can be found at any home improvement store. This can drastically save you money on your heating bill.
Make a challenge with yourself or apartment neighbors to see how long you can go without turning on the heat. You don’t need to raise the temperature and heating bill with the first outdoor temperature dip. This challenge will encourage you to utilize these tips to keep warm, and save money at the same time.
