There is a simple and economic way to seal leaky windows in the harsh cold of winter. A common problem for those who live in the far north is drafty windows. It affects our heating bill, driving it up due to the warmth escaping through the leaks. It can also be impossible to fix once winter arrives. Repairing the leaks will cost money and some “how to” lessons.
If you’ve ever sat next to a drafty window in winter you know what is meant. Many times it feels like it’s more than a leak. Your only option is to move to a different spot in the room. However, if one window leaks, it is likely a problem throughout the house.
Turning the heat up is one way to deal with the leaks. That will cost more money and does nothing to address the problem. We turn our attention to the leaks once winter arrives and that is no time to start opening the windows to repair the problem.
There is a way that is cheaper, quicker and easily accomplished by anyone. You don’t need expensive insulation strips or adhesive and tools. You won’t have to open your windows even temporarily to install the repair either. No special instructions are required. All you need is water, a cheap plastic spray bottle, and really cold temperatures. On any evening when temperatures are below freezing will do. However, the colder the temperatures the better this repair idea will work.
Fill the plastic spray bottle with water. Go outside to the window with the leak. And spray the edges of the window. The water mist will freeze, thereby sealing the window. The closer the temperature is to freezing, 32 degrees F, the more you will have to spray. The beauty of this fix is the colder the temperatures the more readily the water mist freezes and solidifies thereby sealing the window.
Of course, if you live in an area where winter temperatures get above freezing this process will have to be repeated. If you, on the other hand, live where the extreme cold is a constant, the less you’ll have to repeat this fix.
This repair is indeed temporary but can get you through the cold of winter with hardly any cost. It is environmentally safe and not harmful to even the most delicate senses. There is no mess or terrible fumes. Simply spray and seal.
