In a development that will no doubt set both the art world and the cinema world ablaze, a nude painting of a very young Sean Connery has been discovered in Scotland among the works of Rab Webster in Selkirk.
One of the jobs Sean Connery took before he even became a struggling actor was that of an artist’s model at the Edinburgh College of Art in 1951, where the painting was evidently executed. For some perspective, this was 11 years before Connery first lit that cigarette and introduced himself as “Bond, James Bond.”
There is no telling what the value of a painting showing a nude 21-year-old Sean Connery would be worth. In any event, the heirs of Rab Webster hope to put the work in display very soon. So far, Sir Sean, living in semi-retirement from acting, has not commented on the revelation.
Connery is most well-known for his series of James Bond films, depicting the suave, manly British super spy in seven of the franchise, most of them in the 1960s and early 1970s, but with “Never Say Never,” essentially a remake of “Thunderball,” being released in 1983.
Connery broke free of the Bond role and depicted a series of memorable, manly characters in such films as “Robin and Marion,” “The Man Who Would be King” and “The Wind and the Lion.” Connery is also famous for the Soviet sub Captain Marko Ramius in “Hunt for Red October” and, of course, the father of Indiana Jones in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.”
Other memorable Sean Connery films include “The Name of the Rose,” “Murder on the Orient Express,” “Highlander,” “The Untouchables,” “The Russia House,” “First Knight” and “Dragonheart.”
Connery’s last film was something of a miss, titled “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” after which he officially retired from acting, even eschewing a chance to reprise his Dr. Henry Jones role in the fourth Indian Jones film. Connery has lent his voice talents to a video game version of “From Russia with Love” and an animated fantasy, “Sir Billi.”
How much is a nude painting of a 21-year-old Sean Connery, with Bond and all the rest still in his future? There are, of course, the criteria for which all art is usually judged. But also, after all, it is a nude picture of Connery, a man whose roles depicted the very personification of quiet, confident manliness. One suspects that if the painting were ever to be put on auction, it would fetch a tidy sum.
