“Dancing with the Stars” premieres Monday, September 20, 2010 on ABC with a two-night special premiere. Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke announced the new cast in a special press conference that took place Monday, August 31. I’ve always enjoyed the show because, first of all, I like watching ballroom dancing, and it is fun to see people with absolutely no rhythm become better dancers week after week.
This season’s “Dancing with the Stars” cast includes reality television stars Audrina Patridge of the Hills and Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino of “The Jersey Shore.” Well, at least these two cast members already have their spray tans ready for the show. These are two new cast members I don’t look forward to seeing. Hopefully, Patridge and Sorrentino don’t revert to their reality television personas and actually reveal something positive about their personalities.
Of all the cast members, Jennifer Grey probably has the most pressure to perform well because of her role as Baby on the classic dance movie “Dirty Dancing.” She is also the daughter of dancer and Academy Award winner Joel Grey. At the press conference, Grey stated that she realized viewer expectations for her. I expect her to do well in the ballroom section, but Latin dancing may be a little more challenging.
Crowd favorites include Florence Henderson and David Hasselhoff because of their classic roles on television. I don’t know anything about their dancing skills, but Henderson and Hasselhoff are entertainers who know how to perform. They should put on a good show. Florence Henderson, at 76, is this season’s oldest cast member.
Bristol Palin, the daughter of politician Sarah Palin, joins the new cast of “Dancing with the Stars.” I don’t consider her a star; she’s more of a public figure. However, the show always throws someone in the mix that’s not a star in the true since of the world. Last season, it was Buzz Aldrin. I think a lot of viewers, because of preconceived notions or personal feelings, may not give her a chance to improve. Palin will have to do well on Week One, or she could be the first to go.
The rest of the cast include Brandy, Kurt Warner, Kyle Massey, Margaret Cho, Michael Bolton and Rick Fox.
