The SEC Championship Game 2010 will have new faces this time. This year, the SEC Championship Game 2010 will have no sign of Florida, Alabama, or even LSU and Georgia. The teams that clinched their division titles haven’t been here in some time – or ever. For Auburn, their last trip to Atlanta was in their last undefeated season in 2004. Meanwhile, South Carolina has never been there, and stands to be a massive underdog. But in any case, SEC Championship Game tickets will go out to Auburn and South Carolina fans, in the freshest matchup in the game’s history.
The Tigers had an easier route to winning the SEC West, as all they needed to do was split their last two games. For the Gamecocks, they had a winner-take-all showdown with the Gators, after they were humiliated at home against Arkansas.
But yesterday, the SEC Championship Game 2010 matchup was set in stone, by both the Tigers and the Gamecocks. Auburn overcame an early deficit to defeat Georgia, while South Carolina was even more convincing in destroying Florida.
Some may feel that this isn’t a true matchup between the conference’s two best teams. Thanks to Florida’s slide, almost all of the best teams in the SEC were from the West. Along with Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi State were all ranked, while the East only had two teams with a 4-3 record.
Fans may be spoiled from the last two years, as the Florida-Alabama clashes of 2008 and 2009 served as national semifinals. This time, the SEC Championship Game 2010 has BCS stakes for just one team, at least for now.
Auburn remains 11-0, as they control their own destiny for the BCS title game. However, if they lose the Iron Bowl to Alabama, they will need to beat South Carolina and get some help. They could still get a conference crown, even if they lose to Alabama, but their hopes are a little higher than that now.
For South Carolina, they will enter the SEC Championship Game 2010 with a 9-3 record, at best. With two non-conference games left, they want to come in strong, and prove they won’t roll over for Auburn’s coronation. They should be heavily favored against Troy, but then they have their annual rivalry game against Clemson.
The Gamecocks have already been giant killers against Alabama, and they challenged Auburn on the road in September. Yet their losses to Kentucky and Arkansas have proven that they can be inconsistent. Which South Carolina team will show up in Atlanta?
By the time the SEC Championship Game starts, the Gamecocks could be the last hope for TCU, Boise State, and even LSU. But if the Tigers lose beforehand, this matchup won’t mean as much in the big picture.
Yet both teams have a lot of work to do first, as the Gamecocks have two regular season games left, and the Tigers have the Iron Bowl and the Cam Newton mess to distract them. After that, they will meet in Atlanta on Saturday, December 4.
