Selecting a custom closet company can be confusing. This is especially true if you have never before worked with an outside company on a project for your home. You must rely on the experience and expertise of your designer to develop the right solution for your needs. To do this, your designer should ask many questions relating to your project and your expectations for the outcome.
The custom closet design process typically begins with a free in-home consultation. A designer will come to your home, measure the project space, and talk with you about your storage and design wants and needs. The information you share helps your designer plan out the optimal solution to your needs, while designing a space that fits your aesthetic wants as well.
One of the first and most important questions your designer should ask is what the budget is for this project. No, this is not so he/she can spend every last dime you have; it is so he/she can design a space that is neither too sparse nor too elaborate for your needs.
A designer who asks few, if any, specific questions should raise a red flag.
Read through the following list of questions and determine which are appropriate for your situation. Print out the list and have it handy during your in-home consultation.
Be Prepared to Answer These Questions from your Custom Closet Company
General questions about the project may include:
What is your budget for this project?
When do you want your new closet installed?
Where did you hear about the company?
Do you have any coupons?
Specific questions about your unique project may include:
How many pairs of shoes do you have?
Do you fold your pants on a hanger or hang them long?
How many long items (dresses, coats, skirts) do you have?
Do you fold or hang your sweaters?
Do you want drawers in your closet? How many? Jewelry tray?
Do you require a full-length mirror or ironing board in the closet?
During the in-home consultation, you should also have a list of questions to ask of the designer. These questions are discussed in my article Selecting a Custom Closet Company: Questions You Should Ask.
Providing the answers to these questions-and any other relevant questions the designer may ask-will put you on the right path to selecting a custom closet company that will provide the best solution at the right price.
