Notable Anniversaries on September 6th:
William B. McKinley, the 25th U.S. President, was shot and mortally wounded by assassin Leon Czolgosz on September 6, 1901. A known anarchist, Leon Czolgosz confronted President McKinley in Niagara Falls with a concealed pistol and fired twice. Just 18 days later, the President died from complications associated with the gunshot wounds. Convicted of murder, Leon Czolgosz was electrocuted on October 29, 1901.
On September 6, 1916, the first self-service grocery store in America opened. Piggly Wiggly, founded by Clarence Saunders, welcomed pioneering shoppers in Memphis Tennessee on this date.
The world honored the memory of the late British Princess Diana of Wales with a funeral service televised from London’s Westminster Abbey on September 6, 1997.
Dragon Tales, the children’s animated television series, first appeared on PBS kids on September 6, 1999. The program has since aired on several additional cable channels in various countries, including Cartoon Network, Discovery Kids, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Playhouse Disney and others.
