In an effort to quell complaints about the $2 fare rate on Muni, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has offered a discount on the fare rate for transfers. Issued via paper coupon, many have found the “discount coupons” to be useless and annoying. SFMTA’s latest fix? A discount that is automatically calculated, but only if you use your Clipper card.
How the BART to Muni Clipper card discount will work
A 25-cent discount is available when you transfer from BART to Muni as of Oct. 4. To get the discount, you must use your Clipper card to pay for your fare, and the 25 cents will be automatically applied to your card. This means that your fare will drop from the standard $2 fare to $1.75.
However, the discount will only be applied to your card at the Embarcadero through Balboa Stations. At the Daly City station, you will still receive the discount, but it will be in the form of a paper coupon.
Why the BART to Muni Clipper card discount change
There are a number of reasons for this change. Most importantly, the switch from paper coupons to electronic discounts means a huge drop in paper waste at San Francisco stations. Customers were complaining that they would often misplace their paper coupons before they had a chance to use them.
Paper coupons will still be issued at Daly City because their machines have not been updated.
A few notes to remember if you would like to take advantage of the BART to Muni discount
Remember: You must transfer from BART to Muni within one hour after exiting BART, and the return trip must take place within 24 hours if you would like to receive the discount.
BART to Muni discount coupons cannot be used to pay for cable car fares or tickets for special events services. Please keep all receipts for proof of payment of your fare.
Lastly, but most important: You must use the same Clipper card to buy your transfer that you used buy your original fare, and if you have a Muni pass on your Clipper card, it will override any transfer.
