Shannon Sharpe, a former tight end for the Denver Broncos, the Baltimore Ravens, and a Hall of Fame contender, has been accused of sexual assault, according to CBS News. The woman, Michele Bundy, has also filed a temporary restraining order against Sharpe. She claimed that he constantly called her and would claim to be watching her. She also said that he forced her to have sex with him. As news of the scandal became more widespread, Sharpe, an analyst for NFL Today, decided to step down from his position. CBS declined to comment on the on-going legal battle.
If the allegations are true, Shannon Sharpe would be another sports star in a long line of them who have found themselves in hot water over their sexual conduct. The top three sports sex scandals of all time have got to be Mike Tyson coming in at #3, Kobe Bryant, and of course Tiger Woods, whose indiscretions won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
Even though there are a lot of sex scandals that sports stars have found themselves involved in, Mike Tyson took the third place spot because, simply, he was the only one in recent memory who actually got more than just a slap on the wrist. Tyson was in the middle of a great boxing career when allegations of rape by Desiree Washington, a former beauty queen, were all over the news.
The case eventually went to trial and Tyson was convicted and sentenced to six years in prison. While getting out after only serving three years, Tyson still had to answer for his actions, according to BNET. Tyson’s career never fully recovered after, and he found himself the topic of many controversies after.
Kobe Bryant was the only thing on the news, it seemed, in the summer of 2003. He was accused of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old while in Colorado for surgery on his knee. With Bryant denying the claims, but admitting to having consensual sex with the woman, the media frenzy stormed on. Bryant’s wife, Vanessa, stood by his side, and the trial was set for September. But at the last minute, the alleged victim decided that she wasn’t going to testify in the case, according to ESPN. Bryant went on to become the NBA Finals MVP in both 2007 and 2009.
Even during the case, it seemed that Bryant had the support of his fans, and he continues to have their support today. The sex scandal hasn’t really had any consequences for the NBA star, except for $4 million, which he shelled out for a ring for wife Vanessa to apologize for his adulterous ways.
The #1 sports sex scandal of all time has got to be the Tiger Woods scandal. Even though Woods is now back to golf, his media image has surely taken a hit. Woods has lost endorsements with Gatorade, Tag Heur, and Nike, to the tune of about $180 million in lost income, according to the NY Post. That isn’t the only thing that Wood’s lost. His marriage to Elin Nordegren was dissolved on Aug 23, according to People.com. Time can only tell how much of an effect this sex scandal will have on Woods in the future.
The Shannon Sharpe case will definitely be in the news at least throughout the NFL season. If most of the other sports scandals are any indication, Sharpe will be getting off without many consequences.
