Sharron Angle wants to screw veterans
Of all the confusing statements the Nevada Republican Senate hopeful Sharron Angle has made, one is very clear. Sharron Angle wants to privatize the Veterans Administration. At first glance, privatization of some government agencies might be worth a second look. However, we should look closely at why the ultra-conservative Republican might be looking at this idea.
Former President George Bush who pretty much single handedly engineered the economic mess we are now in, decided to privatize Walter Reed Army hospital in 2007 because of the poor condition the hospital was in. A 200 million dollar contract was awarded to an outfit run by former Halliburton Executives. Former Halliburton Executives? Where have we heard that before? Oh, that’s right-Vice President Dick Cheney is a former Halliburton man! Unfortunately, the new company cared more about making money than wounded soldiers.
Sharron Angle still wants to privatize the VA and will follow in the footsteps of President Bush and VP Cheney. The company that received the contract for the Walter Reed Army Hospital fiasco is IAP Worldwide Services. IAP has grabbed other government contracts as well thanks to the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Not to miss an opportunity for profit, IAP also got a contract from FEMA to truck ice to victims of Hurricane Katrina. How much? $120 million! Unfortunately, the ice never made it to those who needed it and IAP decided to store it and charged the government another $10 million.
Sharron Angle apparently believes that whatever is wrong with the Veterans Administration can be cured by this type of privatization. Her opponent, Senator Harry Reid, recently got passed a house bill entitled the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2010 to help VA funding and improve VA facilities. Senator Reid has spearheaded the building of a new VA hospital in Las Vegas with 210 beds that is scheduled to open in 2012.
Angle’s position on issues is confusing to say the least but her argument with the VA seems to be more of a chance for some of her party’s business cronies to dip into the taxpayers wallets. Mrs. Angle said the government exists primarily for the purpose of employing people and bureaucrats. Angle doesn’t talk about the way the VA treats veterans only this is a way to save money. But it is unknown if privatizing would save any money at all. One thing is sure-veterans would receive less care or delayed care and would have to pay more for it. Angle is a big supporter of large insurance companies so they would get a piece of the VA pie too. Angle is obviously mad at the VA because her father, a veteran, cannot get some of his medications through the VA Therefore, she want to put in place a system where those in power can get what they want on the backs of the vets who will most certainly have to pay more for what they get. Veterans are not Sharron Angles concern, making money is.
