BBC is currently broadcasting yet another Sherlock Holmes series. The conceit in this version is that Holmes lives in our own time. This is not time travel or suspended animation; the Victorian Holmes does not exist. It sounds like an intriguing premise, considering the difference in culture over the space of a hundred years. One fun bit, Watson is still a veteran of Afghanistan, this time of the War on Terror rather than Britain’s 19th Century imperials wars. No word as of when or if the show will come to America, though a rumor has it that it may feature on PBS Mystery.
This is not the first instance that Holmes has been taken out of his own time, aside from science fiction versions. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce played Holmes and Watson in the 1940s in a contemporary setting, in one film fighting Nazis.
