San Francisco’s diversity is not only due to a variety of cultural influences, but also because it is an animal-friendly city. A man’s best friend can roam and live comfortably in this beautiful city by the bay, making other dogs living in other U.S. cities, except maybe New York City and Los Angeles, filled with envy.
Aside from the mega pet stores and shops, San Francisco boasts of several noteworthy shops where you can buy your four-pawed, furry friend all the supplies it needs, which include food, toys, clothing and accessories. Mom-and-pop-like shops are popping up in almost every major dog neighborhoods, with many offering friendly, top-notch customer service. Here are my top three choices.
Cheek B Pet Boutique
Established in 2008 by a couple– Katya and Patrick, Cheeko B came into fruition when they first moved to Union Square. Not knowing where they will shop for their two dogs named Cheeko, a Chihuahua/terrier mix, and Frankie, a purebred Chihuahua, the couple took the opportunity to open their own pet boutique. The adage that necessity is the mother of invention had led to Cheeko B becoming a reality.
Located at the intersection of Union Square and Nob Hill, this pet boutique offers clothing, accessories, dog treats, toys and other dog supplies fit for pooch royalties. One can’t help but notice the treats that look delicious to eat, that even humans wonder if they can also have a bite or two. If not for the dog insignias, they may unconsciously do so. Colorful accessories such as designer dog carriers, leashes, collars and wigs are also available. Every displayed item can lure both dog and master inside to investigate more. It will be impossible to leave this shop without grabbing one item or two.
The only drawback for this place is that it is a bit pricey; however, the “yappy hour,” which happens every first Thursday of the month offers treats, beverages and 15 percent off on entire orders. Cheeko B features several San Francisco Bay area companies as well as companies from across the United States and overseas. The store constantly brings in new products.

Another small, family owned and operated business that caters to four-legged furry friends is Cheengoo, which started its roots online in 2005. Cheengoo specializes in high-quality, upscale, stylish pet accessories. It carries luxury collars and leashes, chic apparel, designer pet carriers, as well as toys and grooming accessories.
In 2007, Cheengoo started creating and launching its own line of handmade collars and leashes. The company, which caters to dog and felines, became a wholesale supplier to other pet boutiques around the nation.
The growth and success of its online and wholesale business helped Cheengoo in establishing its store located in Cow Hollow district. Lisa Palik, founder, owner and designer had set standards high in order to meet the needs of its ever-growing clientele with sophisticated taste.
