Only a minority of homeschoolers go from Kindergarten through grade 12. Many make the decision to return to school at some point. If you are wondering if you should make this decision yourself consider the following question and answer.
Q: I am stressed out right now. My marriage seems out of whack. My home is a mess. I am overwhelmed by me kids constant calls for attention. I don’t know if I can continue homeschooling. What should I do?
A: It looks like it might be time to re-evaluate your homeschool decision. However, it is probably not a good idea to do that re-evaluation while you are feeling stressed. I suggest that you take a few days off. Give the kids to Grandma, or another trusted relative, and relax take a mini vacation. When you mind is fresh, you can begin your task of evaluating your homeschool experience.
First, ask yourself why you began homeschooling in the first place. Whether it was to get your child out of a touch situation, for much needed one on one work, or for religious purposes, you need to ask yourself if the issues that caused you to want to homeschool still exist.
Determine if homeschooling is really helping your children. Have your children flourished under your tutelage? Has their confidence or self esteem improved? Has your child failed to improve? Answering these questions will help you determine the effectiveness of your homeschool program.
Determine if homeschooling is the best for you, the parent. Was homeschooling even something that you wanted to do in the first place, or did you feel railroaded in it. If it was your idea, did you make the decision too hastily or did you jump into it blindly? Do you think that perhaps changing your homeschool approach would make things easier, or do you feel completely paralyzed by homeschooling.
Finally, weigh the pros and cons of putting your kids back in school. Make a list for each side, and even ask the older kids to make a list.
Once you have determined which is best for you and the children, you can make a decision about the future of your homeschooling program. Just be careful about making your decision too hastily.
