Living in Yorkville, Illinois, does not always leave a lot of options for family entertainment. While there is shopping and restaurants nearby, those types of activities tend to get boring fast. Silver Springs State Park is a place where you can go year round to enjoy nature and the like. It is a huge 45 acre park with camping, fishing, boating, and trails available for hiking/walking. This is a perfect place to take your family to enjoy some outdoor fun.
Spring and summer are most ideal for this outing. Of course you have plenty of options to choose from during this adventure and most likely you will need to keep returning to complete them all. If you enjoy fishing, there are plenty of spots to fish. There are two lakes/ponds available for beginner fishermen or you can take a stab in the fox river and try to hook a big catfish. For younger children and inexperienced fishermen, I would recommend the lakes/ponds because the current in the river can be temperamental to say the least. There are a bunch of different hiking trails for you to walk or hike at your own pace. Children probably wouldn’t be ideal for these trails as sometimes you can go a little higher up and it might be tough on their little legs. If you feel like having a picnic in the park, there are plenty of pavilions available for your use. Pretty close to some of the pavilions are also some grills available for use. You can have your own cook out with the family and enjoy nature. How awesome is that?
Fall and Winter are a little more tricky to visit here, but it is still an option. If you like the fall leaves changing, then hiking on these trails would be something neat to do on a brisk fall day. You can still attempt to fish as well, though at this point you may or may not catch anything. When the ground freezes and the snow falls, it is nice to walk around and see the froze lakes/ponds and see everything covered in white.
Silver Springs State Park holds many different activities all in one place. If you live in this area and haven’t yet been here, you definitely need to check it out! Kids and adults alike will love this place. For more information about the activities available at Silver Springs State Park, you can visit the Illinois State Park website.
