According to a press release on its web site, Abbott Laboratories is reporting that beetle parts may be found in baby formula produced at a single facility. After an “internal quality review” the company determined that there was a remote possibility that a parts of a “small common beetle” may have been introduced into the baby formula from one area of a baby formula producing facility. Therefore, Abbott Laboratories decided to make a voluntary recall of its Similac Baby formula.
Are Beettle Parts safe to eat for Babies?
The beetle parts should pose little or no health risk to infants. However some “gastrointestinal discomfort” may occur if the insect parts irritate the gastrointestinal tact.
Products included in the recall are Simliac formula products in 8, 12.4 and 12.9 ounce sizes in cans. In addition, Similac products in plastic containers may also contain insect parts.
The following Abbott products are NOT included in the recall of Similac baby formula: Abbott Nutrition liquid ready-to-feed and concentrated infant formulas and all formula and liquid specialty formulas, such as Similac Expert Care™ Alimentum®, Elecare®, Similac Expert Care™ Neosure®, Similac® Human Milk Fortifier, and metabolic formulas for inherited disorders. These products are completely safe to purchase and use.
If you are unsure of whether you have a product that may be affected by this baby formula recall, you should call (800) 986-8850.
This is a completely proactive and voluntary recall of its own product by Abbott Laboratories. The company is recalling about 5 million boxes of its Similac baby formula product.
