According to the US Food and Drug Administration, Abbott has voluntarily recalled one of their products. This recall was released September 22, 2010.
What is being recalled?
Some powder Similac product lines are included in this recall. These products were distributed in the US, Puerto Rico, Guam, and some Caribbean countries.
What’s the problem?
Beetles were found in the production area of one manufacturing facility, and it’s possible that bug parts or larvae could be in the formula. If children were to drink the contaminated formula, they would have upset stomachs and/or refuse to eat because of GI tract irritation from the bug parts.
Which specific baby formula products are involved in this recall?
This recall is for some Similac powder formulas in plastic containers, and 8, 12.4, and 12.9-ounce cans. This recall is for powder products only, not liquid. Abbott also states that their powder and liquid specialty formulas are not included in the recall. These include: Similac Expert Care Alimentum, Elecare, Similac Expert Care Neosure, Similac Human Milk Fortifier, and metabolic formulas for inherited disorders.
What do I do now?
Unfortunately, the recall does not state the affected lot numbers. If you think you have one of these products, call (800) 986-8850 to find out if the lot number on your package is included in this recall. You can return the product to the company free of charge. If your child is experiencing the above symptoms for more than a couple days, you should contact your child’s doctor.
