¼ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
2 ½ cups flour
1 teaspoon vanilla
½ cup sugar
1 cup butter or butter flavored vegetable shortening
1 egg (beaten)
Other baking tools for this recipe:
Wooden spoon or electric mixer
Rolling Pin & Cookie Cutters or Cookie Press
Preheat oven to 350. Beat egg with whisk in separate bowl.
Mix butter and sugar until blended, then add egg and vanilla. (An electric mixer works best, but batter can be mixed with a wooden spoon, or even your hands.)
Add salt and baking powder, mix well.
Add flour about a cup at a time, mixing batter well after each cup is added.
Chill cookie batter in refrigerator for 30 minutes.
Use cookie press to place cookies onto baking sheet, or, if rolling cookies, sprinkle a bit of flour onto rolling surface so that batter isn’t too sticky, then roll with rolling pin and use cookie cutters.
Bake at 350 for 8-13 minutes, depending on your oven. The first batch usually takes a little longer. The next batches normally bake a bit faster, so keep a close eye on cookies so that they do not over bake or burn.
Tips & Notes:
These are pretty basic but very tasty butter cookies.
If you want to dress them up a bit more, you can add sprinkles or icing.
When you first bake these cookies, keep an eye your first few batches in the oven to determine the precise time. I’ve made these in several different ovens and the baking time definitely varies. The buttery cookie taste is best if they are not over-baked.
