Many of us are aware that the environment needs our help. Global warming, reduction in natural resources, and pollution are just a few of the areas in which the environment is suffering. It can seem overwhelming to think of all the damage we are causing to our planet. There are simple things that we can all do in our homes and neighborhoods to make a lasting impact on the world.
One easy way we can all start to make a difference is to reduce our waste. Start by buying products that have little to no packaging. Extra packaging does nothing for the performance of the product. It does, however, bulk up our trash which ends up in landfills. You can also recycle many of the paper and cardboard parts of any packaging that you do get.
Recycling is a great way to help the environment. Simply get a second trash can for your home and use it for aluminum, plastic, and glass. If recycle pick up is not available in your neighborhood you can easily visit a drop-off location while running other errands. There are recycle drop-off sites in various Indianapolis locations. Check the City of Indianapolis website for a drop-off site near you.
Spread the word about recycling at work too. Many work places have soda machines available for employees to use. What happens to the cans when they’re empty? Most are thrown in the trash and end up in landfills. Take the initiative to start a recycling program at your workplace. Set up a recycle container right next to the trash can. Send an office email notifying the staff of the new option and the importance of recycling. Once a week you can collect the recyclables and deposit them at your nearest drop-off site.
Another great way to help our world is to practice water conservation. There are lots of easy ways that we can save water in our homes and at work. Turn off the water when washing hands or brushing teeth. You can save several gallons of water a week just by not letting it needlessly run down the drain. Shorten your normal shower time by five minutes. You’ll still get clean and you’ll feel good about conserving water.
Use a dish pan to catch rinse water from your dishes. You can use this water for indoor plants. The plants won’t mind if there are a few bubbles in it. You will be amazed at how much water is wasted when rinsing dishes. You can also use a version of this concept outside. Set up a bucket to catch rain water in the spring and summer. You can use it to water potted plants or small bed gardens.
There is an enormous need for help in our communities as well. You can make a huge difference in your community by volunteering. There are many great organizations that help the environment. One of the best groups in Indianapolis is Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. You can volunteer with this organization to do gardening, litter pickup, and tree planting. It is a wonderful way to help our neighborhoods.
As you can see there are numerous ways that you can begin to benefit the environment. But don’t stop here. Look for your own ways to make a difference. You can make an impact in a number of simple ways. Why not give it a shot? If we all do just a little we can save the world.
