Sinus pressure can stop up the ears and make it harder to hear out of them until the pressure is released. The pressure of the sinuses on the ears can cause a couple of other irritants that aren’t relieved until the pressure is lifted.
If you have ringing in the ears, tinnitus, the ringing can intensify becoming louder and more of a distraction than normal. If you don’t have tinnitus you can still experience loud prolonged ringing in the ears. The ringing may be a side effect of the medication taken to clear or eliminate symptoms of sinus or it may be a result of pressure inside the ears.
Itching in the ears can arise with sinus and pressure. The itching can be felt throughout the duration of sinus pressure or near the end when relief is near. Itching in the ears can mean the pressure is changing. When the pressure changes the itching may increase until the ears start to pop in layers easing the pressure. The ears will pop in layers when the sinus passages and the ear pathways are so pressurized that the intensity of that pressure can only be depressurized a little at a time.
This effect can be felt when driving up and down hills or dipping up and down the highway when traveling. The ears will build up pressure inside which can effect hearing. Pressure may be lifted by yawning or stretching of the jaw and may need several attempts with layer popping to ease the pressure. Pressure can quickly return at the next hill point and drop which may add to the buildup of existing pressure if the pressure was not completely eliminated from the prior yawn or stretch of jaw. Ear pressure during the drive can cause ringing and itching in the ears.
The road of the sinuses and ears are similar to the drive of the highways.
With pressure of the sinuses the itching and ringing may return or not completely go away if the sinuses get worse or do not completely get better. The itching and ringing may start at the onset of sinus pressure instead of near the latter when the sinuses are clearing, getting better and pressure is easing.
If the sinuses have cleared and ringing and itching in the ears remains there may be another problem at play. Have a talk with an ear doctor or your physician just in case there is something serious which could be detrimental to the value of your overall health.
