I really like to keep my life simple and as uncluttered as I possibly can. That’s not to say that I don’t stay busy and am lounging on a beach everyday but I have set things up so that I can focus on what needs to be done each day without all of the distractions of modern life. Simplifying your life is like an other goal it takes planning and sacrifice to make it work. In this post I want to explore the steps you can take to streamline how you live your daily life and hopefully won’t be so overwhelmed all of the time.
1. Take Back Control of Your Life
Things can pile up very quickly if you aren’t careful and soon every waking hour of the day is booked solid and you question to yourself where is all the time going? To simplify things requires you to first recognize the need for a change and then step outside of your hectic life to see all of it clearly. You got yourself into your current position so sit down in a quiet place and figure how you plan on getting yourself to a more comfortable life without so much stress and strain.
2. Set Priorities
Each and everyday you are faced with decisions that require either more or less of your attention. Since there is only so much time in the day you will have to make cuts or be able to organize your tasks more efficiently. What tasks demand your absolute attention? Okay these will be your main priorities going forward. What in your schedule can you get by without doing? Look for little things to get rid of or severely restrict your time spent doing such as watching TV or surfing the web randomly (looking at your StumbleUpon). I used to watch television every night and now that I’ve cut back my viewing time drastically I’m kind of disappointed knowing that I missed out on thousands of hours I could have been more productive. Use the extra time you come up with to get your main priorities done earlier so that you aren’t constantly rushed by deadlines. Find ways to take care of your main priorities even quicker and then use that time to really pursue your interests. Heck we want to simplify things here take the time to think deeply, go fishing, be with your family, really anything that makes your life worth living.
3. Recreate Yourself
If you’re looking to simplify your life then it could be that you’re completely unhappy with the path that you’re on. What better way to simplify things than by having a fresh slate to work from? Are you a workaholic businessperson that always wanted to be a free-living artist? Why not start to untangle your current life and start down the true path that you want to be on? Shed your old skin and be a more simplified version of you.
4. Simplify Your Relationships
Sometimes the people closest to you in your life are also the most toxic for it. If you’re the one doing most of the work and holding up your end of the bargain while your friends, family member, or significant other isn’t doing their part to keep the relationship mutually beneficial then it may be time to reevaluate. Friends can be gotten rid of fairly easily and it usually isn’t necessary to cut someone of completely just put distance between you until they are ready to be a good friend and enhance your life. It’s naturally tougher with family members and your partners but if they are causing you too much stress in your life let it be known and try to work things out to make it better.
5. Get Rid of Your Clutter
Most of us have acquired an inordinate amount of crap over the years that just sit in our house and go unused. Simplifying your life means letting go of the things that you don’t need. Go through your house and look through all of the things that you own and start to write down what you need and what you don’t need to keep. Don’t get attached to random things that you think you might need some day because you’re just being a pack rat in all honesty. Look for things that you can sell or stuff that simply needs to be trashed. Technology that is obsolete is a good place to start looking for things to get rid of, you might be able to sell it and make a quick buck or at the very least recycle it so it doesn’t get shipped off to god knows where.
6. Manage Your Health
Life is a whole lot simpler when you don’t have constant nagging health problems and a depressed mood to deal with all of the time. It gets overlooked sometimes that how you eat really effects how you perceive your life. I remember last year I was 15 pounds heavier and was eating garbage fast food on a regular basis and felt absolutely miserable at least 3-4 times per week. When I started to workout 4-5 times per week and dramatically cut down on the processed foods I was eating I noticed the insane difference in my moods. It turns out that I am actually a pretty happy person when I treat my body the right way. If you just learn to give up the junk food and exercise you will not only look better but also have less stress and a more positive outlook on life.
