Everyone has a fear, whether it be closed in spaces, spiders, dying, etc. If you have snakes, some people will not even come into your home. Even worse, most will say that if they see a snake, it will be dead. I do not think that some creature needs to die just because it is not cute and furry.
There are snakes in my home. It is hard to find a place to rent when you have pets but dry tank animals such as snakes are accepted. They do not make a mess or damage the property. I admit that I was in that group that didn’t fear snakes but just knew what I thought they were capable of. Now I think that pet snakes (as long as they are non-venomous) are just as good to own as cats or dogs.
I’m sure a lot of people think that reptiles have no personality so why have them as pets? This is one hundred percent false. Snakes may not have ears but they sense everything just as any other pet would. They get jealous just as a cat or dog would if you were paying attention to something else when they want your attention. They also cuddle and show affection.
We hear on the news about all these “venomous snake outbreaks” and “how the little puppy down the street was eaten.” Though these stories are true(sadly enough), have we ever thought how those species get to these places? Most of the venomous snakes founded in the wild(such as in Florida) are usually discarded pets. Young boys get a snake because of how small it is in the pet store(the mom reluctantly agrees) and then boom, its 7 feet long. People need to do their research before getting any pet not just reptiles. If this is the case, why do they not call animal authorities so the snake cannot cause such havoc so to speak? Snakes are in nature. We may not be able to see them all the time but they are there. Would you kill someone just because they were doing what is instinct to do….live?
I still do not understand this fear. I realize that people fear what they do not understand but instead of staying ignorant, isn’t it better to learn? Snakes are far from evil. They act like snakes. A snake is a snake just as we are all humans. Do not fear what you do not know. Then again maybe some people’s snake fear come from religion as a snake was represented as the devil. I cannot answer these questions. All I can do is shake my head and try to teach awareness not fear.
