Snooki of Jersey Shoreis about to do her part for promoting literacy among guidos and guidettes: She is writing a book. The 4’9″ faux-Italian temptress is putting her name if not her pen to a novel with the working title A Shore Thing, according to the New York publishing house Gallery Books.
Snooki, whose real name is Nicole Polizzi, reportedly has only read two books in her life, including the tween vampire romance Twilight. As with most celebrity “authors,” the novel likely will be ghosted.
In fact, it likely has already been ghostwritten. Gallery Books’s press release reveals that the 288-page novel (which will be released in hard-back: no straight-to-paperback prose for the Snookster!) will be published in January 2011 and have a suggested retail price of $24.
Fun, Sexy Novel
Gallery Books’s press release says Snooki’s novel is tale about “a girl looking for love on the boardwalk (one full of big hair, dark tans and fights galore).”
According to Jennifer Bergstrom, the vice president of Gallery Books, Snooki has given the world “a fun, sexy novel about a single girl looking for love on the Jersey Shore.”
Who could resist (other than her former Jersey Shore co-star Angelina)?
After reportedly drying out after a drinking binge in Miami during the latest season of her reality TV show, Snooki is psyched and ready to join the company of the Grace Metaliouses and Jacqueline Susannes of the world of lit’rachur.
In a statement released under the Snooki name, America’s favorite midget tanoholic announced, “I’m pumped to announce to my fans a project that I’ve been working on for some time.”
The statement went on to give us potential readers an example of Snooki’s deathless prose: “This book will have you falling in love at the shore. It’s A Shore Thing!”
Oscar-Winner Writing Western Novel
In related news, if one considers Gene Hackman — the two-time Oscar-winner who not only is one of the finest actors of his generation, but a published novelist to boot — a member of the same profession (entertainment?) and race (human?) as Snooki — Hackman is working on his first solo writing project, a novel in the Western genre.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Hackman — who retired from acting in 2004 — is writing a novel called Jubal’s Bounty, which is set in New Mexico in the late 1800s. Hackman has co-written three earlier novels, Wake of the Perdido Star, Justice for None and Escape from Andersonville.
Jubal’s Bounty will be the first novel he will have published under his own name, as sole author.
In a 2008 interview around the time of the publication of Escape from Andersonville, Hackman told an interviewer what he liked about writing. “I like the loneliness of it, actually. It’s similar in some ways to acting, but it’s more private and I feel like I have more control over what I’m trying to say and do.”
Pocket Books plans to publish Jubal’s Bounty in the summer of 2011.
Both Pocket Books and Gallery Books are divisions of Simon & Shuster. Snooki’s book likely will be published under Gallery Books’s MTV Books imprint.
