Snow days are great to cuddle up with a blanket and watch great movies! There are my favorites for these kind of days.
Snow Day (2000) PG
Chevy Chase, Chris Elliot
Storyline: A group of elementary students try to make sure that school remains closed on a snow day by stealing the snowplow so that the driver cannot clear the town. In the meantime, the brother of one of the elementary students tries to win over the most popular girl in his high school.
Opinion: This movie is a great family movie. It is funny and offers some “child like” adventure that the whole family will enjoy! It is truly a “Snow Day” movie!
Home Alone (1990) PG
Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci
Storyline: Kevin McCallister, an 8 year old, is mistakenly left behind by his family when they leave for a Holiday vacation to Paris. Kevin has a blast being home alone until he discovers that 2 burglars are planning to break into his home on Christmas Eve. Kevin has to find a way to stop them so he sets traps throughout his house for when they attempt their robbery.
Opinion: This movie is hilarious! The whole family will enjoy this humor packed movie showing how a child can come up with some very inventive traps. The movie also offers some heartfelt scenes when the family is reunited.
Knocked Up (2007) R
Seth Rogen, Katherine Heigl
Storyline: Alison Scott meets party animal Ben Stone at a bar one night while she was celebrating a promotion. After much partying and drinks a one night stand turns in to a pregnancy for Allison. Allison tries to get to know Ben and try to development a relationship for the baby’s sake but realizes that Ben has a lot of growing up to do.
Option: This is not a movie for young kids but a great comedy for adults. I truly enjoyed watching this; it was filled with humor, and romance. It really shows the importance of changing your life as you become a parent!
Bad Boys (1995) R
Will Smith, Martin Lawrence
Storyline: Marcus and Mike are Miami detectives working to retrieve drugs that were stolen for the police station. During this mission they have to pretend to be each other in order for a witness to assist them.
Opinion: This is a great action packed movie with comedy as well. It keeps you wondering what will happen but also keeps you laughing.
You’ve Got Mail (1998) PG
Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks
Storyline: Kathleen Kelly owns a small children’s book store in which a large chain is moving into the neighborhood forcing her to close due to a decline in sales. In the meantime Kathleen has been engaging in online chatting with a man that she falls in love with. Little does she know this man, Joe Fox, that she loves for is the one who put her out of business.
Opinion: I love this movie! It is full of romance and comedy. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks do an amazing job in this movie. It is a great movie to cuddle up in a blanket and watch on a snowy day.
Step Up (2006) PG-13
Channing Tatum, Jenna Dewan
Storyline: Tyler Gage is a “bad boy” living in Baltimore with his foster parents. After breaking into the Maryland School of Arts with his friends and vandalizing the stage he is sentenced to 200 hours of community service to be performed at the school he destroyed. Nora Clark is a dancer at the school who sees Tyler dancing in the parking lot one day. Nora’s current partner gets hurt and she needs to find a fill in to rehearse her graduation piece. After auditioning many students Tyler offers to help, Nora is hesitant but finally accepts. As they rehearse they becoming closer and closer until Nora’s original partner returns and she drops Tyler.
Opinion: This movie is full of romance, music, and dancing. It is a great story about changing your life around and setting goals. This young man rose above his environment and focused on doing better. If you love dancing and romance you will enjoy this movie!
Walking Tall (2004) PG-13
Dwayne Johnson (The Rock), Neal McDonough
Storyline: Chris Vaughn returns to his hometown after serving 8 years in the Army. When he returned he was hopeful of getting a job at the mill that was the town’s main source of employment and revenue when he left. Once back at home he learns that the mill has been closed and replaced by a casino owned by his former high school friend. After a short time he realizes that the town has been taken over by crime, drugs, and mobsters with the town sheriff involved in. He decides to take matters into his own hands and clean up the town.
Opinion: This movie has it all! It has action, suspense, humor, and romance. The Rock does a great job in his role as the town “hero”.
Something’s Gotta Give (2003) PG-13
Jack Nicholson, Diane Keaton
Storyline: Harry is an older man that likes dating younger women. While dating Marin they take a trip to her mother’s summer home for the weekend not knowing that her mother will also be there. On the first night there Harry suffers a heart attack and is forced to stay put at the Marin’s mother’s (Erica) home despite Marin returning to the city. During his stay they become closer and feelings develop but not without complications.
Opinion: This movie is a perfect one to watch on a cold day inside. It is filled with humor and romance. Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton work great together in this movie. I can watch this one over and over again!
Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) R
John Cusack, Crispin Glover
Storyline: Four friends take a trip to a winter resort they used to party at when they were younger to get away from their lives which are not going so well at the time. The resort is now a dump but the guys decide to make the best of it with a night of drinking and sitting in the hot tub. The hot tube turns out to be a time machine which takes them back to 1986. They now have to decide if it is best to do everything as they did that night in 1986 or change things in order to change their lives in the future. There are consequences that must be weighed.
Opinion: I was not sure if I would enjoy watching this movie but it turned out to be hilarious. It is a movie that lets you forget about your life for a little while and just enjoy the comedy and watch them make decisions while back in the 80’s.
The Karate Kid (1984) PG
Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita
Storyline: Daniel keeps getting hassled by a group of boys that all belong to a particular Karate school. After Mr. Miyagi jumps in to save Daniel when he is again cornered by this group he asks Mr. Miyagi to teach him karate. Daniel has a hard time seeing what he is being taught by how it is being taught but soon realizes it. He is training to face off at a karate tournament against the boys that have been beating him up.
Opinion: A classic! There is nothing better than a good classic on a cold day. This movie has a great story and life lesson behind it. It is great for the whole family.
