DETROIT – Rick Snyder, the Republican candidate to become Michigan’s next Governor, has chosen Representative Brian Calley, born in Dearborn, who now lives in Portland, Michigan, and who has been serving as a mid-Michigan state representative for over 3 years.
Rick Snyder being a first time candidate needed someone who represented Snyder’s new-look, business orientated Republican brand, and who also has real experience when it came to dealing with the state legislator, and Representative Brian Calley seems to fit the bill.
Brian Calley, who before being voted in as a Representative was and still is the Vice President of Irwin Union Bank. This troubles me deeply, as the FDIC needed to close the Indiana Irwin Union bank branch due to operating in an “unsafe unsound matter”, similar to the greedy too-big-too-fail banks on Wall Street.
For the Snyder campaign, who believes running a state like a business is the way forward for Michigan, his choice for Lieutenant Governor is a bit odd, I’m not sure Rep. Brian Calley speaks of trust or business smarts for the average Michigander.
After reviewing Brian Calley’s business experience I moved on to his voting record for the past 3 years, his entire voting record can be found here, so you can make a judgment for yourself.
For me, the combination of being a banker who ran a bank that the FDIC needed to bail out with our tax dollars and close down, along with a voting record that does not respect a woman’s right to choose even if she has been raped, are two key components that appall me.
Throw in the fact that representative Calley supports big pharmaceuticals and not protecting human life even though he claims to be a “pro lifer” also strikes me as insincere and at odds with himself. Voting against the Meadows Amendments which allowed for any consenting person to obtain contraceptives is also baffling, for someone who is against abortions you would think giving people contraceptives so they don’t get pregnant would be a home run? Instead the warped logic of having contraceptives increases sexual behavior which some how relates to being a pro-lifer is ironic and confusing, is Calley against sex or abortions?
Calley’s pro-business voting record also shows him voting no for Part-Time Work Unemployment Benefits during the second worse American depression, mostly caused by banks and bankers, which Calley is one of. His Nay votes on amendments to curb Auto Insurance companies from discriminating against low income families and people not at fault is also alarming and continues to paint a picture of a pro-business republican not interested in the average person’s well being.
Calley also voted no on amendments to prohibit banks from continuing their assault on American families who are underwater in their mortgages by not allowing for a foreclosure hold until jobs return for these households. Calley also voted No on helping underwater families renegotiate their most likely unfair, fraudulent mortgages in order to keep them in their homes until the economy and job environment improves.
Calley is also for unregulated campaign financing, voting no to increasing unemployment benefits for out of work workers who’s benefits have run out, and also voted no on the Presidential Election by Popular Vote amendment, which would respect America’s voters choice, instead of relying on an out-of-date electoral college which sometimes gives us a President not chosen by the majority of American voters.
I hope the Snyder campaign enjoys their current lead in the polls, because with a voting and business record like Representative Brian Calley has, the Michigan voter will easily be able to see who’s side Rick Snyder is really on, and it’s not the average Joe in the streets facing the worse job environment in decades, along with undervalued wages, and the countries sixth highest foreclosure rate.
